# A tram passing the people's kitchen

A Novi Sad electric tram approaches along a wet street while pedestrians cross the tracks and several men stand beside a building marked НАРОДНА КУЈНА. The two-axle tram belongs to the electric system that operated in the city from 1911 to 1958. People's kitchens were an established part of Novi Sad life during the interwar period. The local Red Cross and women's charitable organizations operated a relief kitchen for poor residents from the late 1920s, but contemporary municipal records also use the term narodna kuhinja for privately operated inexpensive eating establishments. Because the photograph carries no visible Red Cross identification and the exact street has not yet been established, the function of this particular kitchen should remain open.
