# One-gulden note of the Vienna City Bank, 1800

A single gulden in paper, dated Vienna, 1 January 1800, from the first issue to include notes small enough for everyday use. The wars against revolutionary France had drained the monarchy's silver, and the text makes the note good as cash in every payment due in the Hungarian, Bohemian and Austrian lands, where the notes of 1762 had served for half. “Gr. St. Wien Banco Zettel f. Ein Gulden” runs down both margins, and the paper is worn soft and torn at the edges.
