# Girls' civic school on Andrássy Street

A postcard view along Andrássy Street, today's Njegoševa, toward the Hungarian Royal State Civic Girls' School at what is now Njegoševa 22. The large historicist school building stands behind a row of lower houses while several pedestrians occupy the still unpaved street. The state civic girls' school in Újvidék had opened in the 1876–77 school year following an initiative by Hungarian education minister Ágoston Trefort. Its purpose-built school building was erected here in 1895 and is attributed by local heritage research to architect Béla Pekló. After 1918 the building continued to serve education, housing the State Women's Gymnasium from 1919; today it is Gimnazija "Svetozar Marković".
