# Bathers crowding the Danube beach at Strand

A hand-coloured card of the city beach, captioned NOVISAD and Strand in Cyrillic and Latin along the lower edge. Bathers in dark one-piece costumes crowd the sandbar in their hundreds, a rope strung along the shallows behind them and willows closing the far bank. Two wooden rowing boats are drawn up on the sand, one with a pair of boys sitting in it. Strand had opened as the official beach in 1911, on the Poloj sandbar, and this is what a summer afternoon there looked like by the end of the 1920s.
