# Fifty one years of city transport, marked on the square

A long painted banner is strung on poles across the main square, lettered in large capitals. Beneath it three vehicles stand in line for display. At the left a four wheel tram motor car with its trolley pole raised, its dash carrying a number and its windows papered with printed notices. Beside it a double deck bus, its upper and lower windows likewise papered. Beyond that a single deck bus, and past it a van and a lorry carrying an open display stand. Flags on tall staffs stand at the left of the frame and bunting hangs from the buildings behind. Tubs and stands of cut flowers are set on the cobbles at the front of the line. A crowd moves about the vehicles, men in overcoats and hats, women in headscarves and coats, and an elderly woman in the left foreground looks toward the camera. Ornate nineteenth century frontages close the square behind.
