# The Workers' Chamber, a modernist block with a brick tower

The Workers' Chamber at its street corner: a modernist block whose stair tower is faced in banded brick, glazed down its middle and topped by a flagpole. A round window sits high on the side wing, which steps down to a lower brick block with a curved gable, and shopfronts under flat canopies run along the boulevard front. Young trees stand beside the unpaved roadway, wires cross overhead, and a man in a hat stands at the foot of the tower. Dragiša Brašovan won the competition for the building, which went up from 1929 and opened on 5 July 1931; it is known today as the Svetozar Marković Workers' Home. The low stepped end belongs to the first design, and Đorđe Tabaković built a taller addition on that side in 1940.
