# Peterwardein, by A. H. Payne

An engraving of the fortress drawn and cut by A. H. Payne and published at Dresden and Leipzig about 1848, so within a decade of the Bartlett view and from much the same position. The flat-topped white cliff carries the barrack ranges along its edge, the water-gate curtain wall runs at river level beneath, and the Danube is wide and open with a paddle steamer on it. Boatmen in local dress work in the foreground on the near bank.
