# The Altwirth Textile House on Kossuth Lajos Street, the Bishop's Palace Beyond

A postcard headed with the city's Hungarian name looks along the main shopping street, its roadway still bare earth with no rails laid in it. On the left a long two-storey terrace carries the fascia of the Friedrich Altwirth's Sohn cloth and fashion house above its shopfronts, and further down a shop hangs a large round watch sign out over the pavement. The view closes on the Serbian Orthodox Bishop's Palace, its centre bay crowned by a small onion-domed lantern. Barefoot boys stand about in the road and a carriage waits beyond them.
