# Sinking a pole on the main square, with the tram passing

A raised view across the main square while work is going on in the middle of it. In the centre foreground a group of men in shirtsleeves and caps work a timber shear legs rig over a hole in the paving, a heavy frame of poles lashed at the head with a block and tackle, hauling on ropes while others steady a pole being lowered. Broken paving and heaps of spoil lie around the opening. A crowd stands in a loose ring watching, men in shirtsleeves, women in summer dresses, several boys in front, one with a bicycle. At the left a four wheel tram motor car stands on its rails with the overhead wire above it, a lorry and a van parked beyond. Further back a second lorry crosses the open square and small figures walk about it. At the right a monument on a tall pedestal rises at the edge of the frame, with more onlookers and bicycles at its foot, and the frontages of the square close the view behind.
