# Shops beneath the Winkle Palace

A postcard view of the newly built Winkle Palace on Kossuth Lajos Street, today's Kralja Aleksandra, with shopfronts occupying the ground floor and apartments above. Men and boys gather along the pavement beneath the long Secession façade, while the name of merchant Zsigmond Kassowitz appears prominently above one of the premises. The building was commissioned by businessman István Winkle and designed by Budapest architect Károly Kovács in 1906–1907. It was already occupied by autumn 1907. Contemporary sources describe the property as the Winkle Palace or Winkle-udvar and record a busy commercial courtyard behind the street frontage, containing businesses including a beer hall and printing works.
