# The Infantry Cadet School, Sremska Kamenica

A two-funnelled paddle steamer lettered SOPHIE runs in the foreground under a flag at her bow mast, her upper deck awninged. Beyond her the village climbs the bank in red-tiled roofs, a slender spire at one end and a bulbous-domed tower at the other, and the long white two-storey range of the cadet school stands clear on the ridge above the houses. The card is a chromolithograph worked up in greens and reds. Its caption is German but for the Hungarian word for a greeting, Üdvözlêt, and it does two things at once, naming the imperial and royal infantry cadet school and advertising the village below it as an air-cure resort, so one card sold a garrison and a health spa together. It was published by the court photographer J. Singer, who worked in the town across the river rather than in the village itself.
