# Opening page of du Mont's chapter on the Battle of Petrovaradin

The first page of the chapter on the battle of Petrovaradin in the first volume of Jean du Mont's Dutch history of Prince Eugene's battles, printed in The Hague in 1729. An etched vignette signed by Jan Wandelaar after Jan van Huchtenburg heads the page: a small map of the two armies drawn up across the Syrmian plain between Belgrade, Zemun, Slankamen and Karlovci, framed by captured arms and standards, eagles, river gods, Fame with her trumpet and a wreathed portrait of Eugene. The same design also circulated in a Nuremberg version engraved by August Christian Fleischmann. The printed title dates the battle to 4 August 1716, a day earlier than the 5 August engraved on the volume's own plates of the same action, and the text opens with the Ottoman war on Venice and the fall of the Morea.

Designed by J. Huchtenburg. Engraved by J. Wandelaar. The Battle of Petrovaradin, fought on 4 August 1716. The Ottoman Porte had attacked the Venetians, without troubling itself in the least about the armistice concluded at Karlovci in the year 1699. They had not been able to withstand the overwhelming superiority of the Turkish arms. Coron, Modon, Napoli di Romania and Napoli di Malvasia, places that had cost so much blood to win and so much money to keep, surrendered out of sheer fright and fear. The whole Morea had submitted, and the Porte, proud of so swift an advance, was already stretching its aim to the other side of the Gulf. Volume I. Ff. They
