# Queen Mary Boulevard before the Banovina

A wide new boulevard runs east toward the Danube, its street trees still slight and a horse and cart standing in the roadway. The rounded corner block on the left carries ДОМ НОВОСАДСКЕ ТРГОВАЧКЕ ОМЛАДИНЕ cut across the band of its cornice, with a reclining figure on the roofline above it and shops under awnings along the ground floor. Beyond it a row of modernist blocks steps away down the street. The far side of the boulevard is still open ground crossed by a footpath, and the steel truss of the Prince Tomislav Bridge stands against the sky in the distance on the right. The corner building is Đorđe Tabaković's home for the Novi Sad commercial youth, and the figure on its roof is Mercury, the god of commerce. The empty ground opposite is the site where the Banovina was begun in August 1936.
