# Peterwardein, by W. H. Bartlett and J. C. Armytage

A steel engraving after a drawing by William Henry Bartlett, engraved by James Charles Armytage for William Beattie's book on the Danube, published in London by George Virtue. Petrovaradin Fortress stands on its sheer white limestone rock above a wide, still Danube, the long barrack range along the crest and the water-gate bastions of the lower town at river level. A paddle steamer lies at the near bank with smoke rising from its funnel and a roofed barge alongside, a covered ferry is rowed across the middle distance and fishing boats lie out on the water. The near shore, on the Novi Sad side, is a working landing where men in broad hats roll and stack barrels, bales and baskets across the shingle.
