# The Machine That Raised Danube Water to the Upper Fortress, Plan and Profile

A working drawing of the water-raising engine put into service at Petrovaradin in 1758 and 1759, laid out across a single wide sheet with a numbered key of thirteen parts. It shows the great drive wheel and its gearing, the pressure cylinders in section with their brass valves, an elevation of the pump house, and a profile cut through the fortress works rising from the water, with the plan of the upper works and its cistern at the right. The key records that the water was drawn from a canal-fed well by pumps, settled through three successive tanks, and driven up 18 fathoms of vertical height through lead pipes let into the gallery wall. The wheels were turned by seven prisoners.
