# The market on the square before the old church

A crowded market scene on an open square, the print soft and blurred with movement. In the middle ground a mass of carts stands drawn up in rows, high wheeled wooden waggons with their shafts down and their loads under covers, horses standing between the shafts and men climbing on the loads. A dense crowd of people fills the foreground and the spaces between the carts, women in long skirts and headscarves, men in hats and heavy coats, several standing still enough to be sharp while others have moved during the exposure. In the left foreground a group of men in dark coats and hats stand together facing the camera, one holding a paper. A white horse stands in the near foreground with a man in a broad hat beside it. Behind the market a long low building with a hipped roof and a colonnaded porch stands among trees, and to the right the tall plain flank and high round headed windows of a large church rise above the stalls, with an ornamental lamp standard and the corner of a further building beyond.
