# The Jewish Street, a Tram Passing the Modernist Corner Block

Two fascias fix the moment more closely than the tram does. One is the small outlet of the Hungarian royal tobacco monopoly, a shop sign that only stood under Hungarian administration; the other, across the modernist block, is a German trade sign in script giving a proprietor's name with a brand word after it and a line beneath advertising juice and jam wholesaling. With a 1930s building already up, that pairing points to the occupation years of 1941 to 1944. Rails and overhead wire run down the wet setts with a tram at the far end, and a covered horse van waits at the kerb.
