# The Fortress of Peterwardein on the Danube in Syrmia, from the Bibliographisches Institut

A working riverside seen from the shingle on the near bank: casks, a crate and a coil of rope lie at the water line, a man in a top hat bends over a bundle, and two women in headscarves sit among wicker baskets in a laden boat. Covered barges are moored alongside under a tall mast and a floating mill rides at the left. Across the water the fortress crowns its height above the lower town of Petrovaradin, with the hills of Fruška Gora receding beyond. A steel engraving issued about 1850 by the Bibliographisches Institut at Hildburghausen as plate CLXXXVIII of a series.
