# The Serbian elementary school on the corn market square

A long two storey school building runs away from the left foreground down one side of a wide cobbled street. Its ground floor is plain and its upper floor carries tall windows between flat pilasters under a heavy cornice, with a small pedimented attic over the centre and lettering set into the wall beneath it. A projecting porch with a pediment on brackets stands at the near end, and a line of young bare trees is planted along the pavement in front, each with a guard. A low iron railing on a stone plinth runs along the left edge of the frame. Groups of children and a few adults stand along the pavement and a woman in a long dark skirt waits by the porch. The roadway is empty. Further down, the street narrows between lower buildings and market stalls with white canopies stand at the right, with shop lettering on a gable above them.
