# Eugen Klein's modernist shop and apartment house

The newly modernist Klajn building rises sharply above the older pitched-roof houses of King Alexander Street, with Eugen Klein's shop occupying the highly glazed ground floor. Architect Đorđe Tabaković designed the residential and commercial building for merchant Eugen Klajn in 1932, making it one of the earliest major modernist insertions into Novi Sad's historic centre. Its smooth unornamented façade, broad horizontal windows, projecting glazed bays and extensive shopfront glazing contrasted deliberately with the surrounding nineteenth-century streetscape. Klein's business specialised in knitwear, stockings and underwear, and contemporary advertisements describe it as one of the city's principal specialist shops. During construction Tabaković revised the upper part of the design, replacing a planned studio and terrace with an additional residential floor. The building survives at today's Kralja Aleksandra 6.
