# The Battle of Peterwardein, by Jan van Huchtenburg

A painting of the battle fought before Petrovaradin in 1716. Winged figures of Fame and Victory fly out of the smoke at the upper left, trumpets sounding, while below them the imperial entrenched camp and the long lines of both armies stretch back across the plain to the horizon. In the foreground the fighting is hand to hand, a commander on a white horse at the centre directing it, with the Ottoman dead and their standards fallen across the ground before him.
