# The last house left standing between the new blocks

A single storey house with a steep tiled roof and a plain rendered front stands alone on a corner of bare ground. It has two small windows to the street, a house number by the door, and a high blank gable at one end. Around it the ground has been stripped to sand and rubble, with a strip of rough grass and a chain link fence enclosing a narrow garden of young plants. A weathered timber paling runs away to the right and a row of dark conifers stands behind it. Hard against the house on the left rises a new concrete block of flats, six or more storeys of pale panels and open balconies, its ground floor still unfinished with a heap of builder's spoil at its foot. A second slab shows further back and a white building with a taller roof stands behind the conifers.
