# Across the water to Petrovaradin from the Liman bank

A winter view across the Danube from a bare earth bank, framed by the trunk and bare limbs of a large tree at the right and thinner branches overhanging from the left. Patches of old snow lie in the hollows of the foreground and the ground runs down to the water past a line of low posts. A long barge with a deck house is moored against the near bank at the left, its bow out into the stream and a mooring line running ashore, with two figures standing on the mud beside it and a shed on the bank above. Across the still water the escarpment of Petrovaradin rises, its bare face broken by terraces, with the ranges of the fortress spread along the crest and the clock tower standing clear at the point. Low buildings run along the waterline beneath it and the whole of it lies reflected in the river.
