# Neusatz in Hungary, from the Bibliographisches Institut

The view looks from the Syrmian side of the Danube across a garden or orchard towards Novi Sad on the far bank, with Petrovaradin Fortress rising at the right. A man and two women stand and sit by a bench near a house among the trees in the foreground, a boat is out on the water, and the ship bridge crosses the river below. The plate is lettered NEUSATZ in UNGARN and numbered DCXXXXII, and it was published in 1850 in the fourteenth volume of Joseph Meyer's Meyer's Universum by the Bibliographisches Institut of Hildburghausen and Amsterdam. THE VIEW ITSELF IS OLDER THAN THE PLATE: it is a reduced derivative of Jakob Alt's lithograph Syrmien. Peterwardein und Neusatz, published by Adolf Friedrich Kunike in 1826, down to the same viewpoint, the same garden and house and the same three figures. So the townscape here is the Novi Sad of the 1820s and must not be read as the city in 1850, which is after the bombardment of 1849.
