# The Danube harbour at Újvidék

Barges and other river craft lie moored closely along a low natural bank, a small steam vessel among them, with gangways and simple cargo-handling structures reaching between the vessels and the shore. A clinker-built rowing boat rests on the bank in the foreground and a horse-drawn cart marked 20 stands at right. The card is captioned in Hungarian and German alone, naming the harbour of Ujvidék and of Neusatz, with no South Slavic version. Novi Sad kept a permanent Danube landing north of Mostobran through the nineteenth century, and river freight mattered there until a purpose-built freight port opened on the Mali Stapar to Novi Sad canal, the Franz Joseph Canal, in 1910. The broad open water and the distant wooded far bank suit the Danube waterfront rather than the narrower canal harbour, though no fixed landmark in the frame settles which stretch of the bank this is.
