# The crowd outside the Camel Inn

A large group of men, women and children poses outside the Gostionica kod Kamile, the Camel Inn, in 1900. The low corner building carries its Serbian Cyrillic name across the façade, with a painted camel sign above the corner entrance, while a horse-drawn carriage waits at the left. The inn stood at the northern end of Lebarski sokak, today's Svetozara Miletića Street, at its junction with Jovana Subotića, opposite the Greek Catholic church. During the second half of the nineteenth century it became one of Novi Sad's best-known literary and political meeting places. Its long-time proprietor was Petar Jovičić, known as Pera Kamila. Svetozar Miletić, Jovan Jovanović Zmaj and other writers, journalists and public figures gathered there, and a room remembered as Miletić's hall was decorated with paintings by Đura Jakšić. In 1880 Jovičić donated two original Jakšić paintings from the inn to Matica srpska.
