# The Battle of Petrovaradin on 5 August 1716

A hand coloured engraving of the battle, set inside a printed border with a trophy of banners, spears and drums above and a scrolled cartouche below. The upper half looks down over a wide plain from a height: a town of red roofs with two church spires at the lower left, long parallel lines of tents and earthworks ranged across the middle distance, and wooded hills closing the horizon. In the foreground the cavalry have met. Horsemen in blue and green coats and tricorne hats ride into a press of figures in turbans and loose red and yellow dress, a dark blue standard is held up at the centre, and ranks of infantry with shouldered muskets stand behind them at the right. Dead and wounded men lie across the grass among fallen horses, a dropped sabre and a shed saddle, and a stripped figure in a green wrap stands at the left edge. The engraved caption in the cartouche gives the day as the fifth of August 1716.
